Hair transplants offer the perfect solution to counter hair loss. The procedure has greatly improved as a result of years of research and development. Surgical hair treatments, which started with pluggy, doll-like transplants has refined so much over the last few decades that today even your hairstylist would be able to detect transplanted hair on your scalp.
What are different hair transplant methods?
There are a variety of surgical hair restoration techniques available in this day and age, but three most commonly used and probably the most sought after methods are:
What is the difference between hair transplant techniques?
As stated above, surgical hair restoration has advanced a lot over the last couple of decades. Initially, it was only FUT hair transplant, also known as strip method transplant. FUE Hair Transplant and Stem Cell FUE Transplant are modern day techniques.
Every hair transplant method differs from others in a number of ways. Let’s discuss it in detail:
How grafts are collected with each technique?
The first difference between the three procedures is how the grafts are collected. In case of FUT hair transplant a linear strip of scalp with healthy, balding resistant follicles is excised from the donor site. The main principle of graft collection in case of FUE and Stem Cell FUE transplant is the same but they use different tools. The FUE hair transplant uses a pneumatic punch to remove individual follicles. On the other hand, Stem Cell FUE works with a mechanized device, allowing a number of advantages.
What is the graft thickness?
The thickness of the graft varies in the three procedures and that has an effect on the overall results. Grafts obtained through strip excision have maximum thickness. In FUE, the typical graft thickness is 1mm which gives a fairly natural result. However, graft thickness in stem cell FUE is 0.5mm to 0.7mm. This gives an extremely natural appearance to the transplanted hair.
How many grafts each technique allows in a single session?
FUE hair transplant allows transplanting minimal number of grafts in a single session, courtesy its laborious nature. It can allow a max of 2000 grafts in a single sitting. Then comes the FUT hair transplant in which the surgeon can transplant up to 3000 grafts in one session. However, the number of grafts with stem cell FUE can go up to 4500 in a single session. This is such due to the fast nature of the grafts collection with mechanized punch tool.
How will it impact the donor region?
The effects of graft harvesting on the donor region are also different. Strip method transplant causes a notable linear scar at the back or side of the scalp, from where the strip is excised. The scars left by FUE are quite small and not noticeable with normal length hair. The direct automated FUE or Stem Cell FUE hair transplant is also known as scarless hair transplant since it allows hair regrowth in the donor area, thus causing minimal to no scarring.
Will hair regrow in the donor area?
The follicles which have been removed for transplantation cannot regrow in case of FUE Hair transplant and strip method plantation. However, Stem Cell FUE has made it possible. Since the graft removed is small in size, some part of it is left in the donor region. Approximately half of the removed follicles grow out at the donor site.
What is the recovery period?
The recovery period for FUT Hair Transplant is around two to three weeks. A few days of bed rest are recommended and for the rest of the time, some routine matters like massage, workouts, etc. need to be avoided or done with lesser intensity. However, in case of FUE and Stem Cell FUE method the recovery period is 7 to 10 days at most. Nevertheless, you can get back to work on 3rd or 4th day of the surgery.
What is the Cost of treatment?
The actual cost of treatment varies with the facility and the surgeon that is performing the procedure as well as the technique used. FUT hair transplant is the least expensive while Stem Cell FUE is the costliest among all.
Which one offers the best results?
The overall results are quite good with all three options. In recent years, Follicular Unit Extraction Transplant has been the most sought after hair transplant in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. However, the newer technology certainly offers better overall results with nearly a 100% success rate. Both options are good and offer great value for your money.
If budgetary constraints are not a factor, stem cell FUE is certainly a better option.
